Plodem je t\u0159\u00edhrann\u00e1 tobolka dlouh\u00e1 okolo dvaceti centimetr\u016f, napln\u011bn\u00e1 ka\u0161i\u010dkou z&nbsp;jemn\u00fdch semen. Jedna rostlina ale nem\u00e1 v\u00edce ne\u017e pades\u00e1t tobolek a je schopn\u00e1 plodit po dobu dvaceti let. Vanilkov\u00e9 lusky (slovo vanilka poch\u00e1z\u00ed ze \u0161pan\u011blsk\u00e9ho v\u00fdrazu pro lusk), spr\u00e1vn\u011b tobolky, jsou su\u0161en\u00e9 plody t\u00e9to rostliny. S kakaem p\u0159\u00edli\u0161 nezaujal \u2013 zato vo\u0148av\u00e1 vanilka se okam\u017eit\u011b stala hitem. Pro evropsk\u00e9 boh\u00e1\u010de to byl symbol luxusu, asi jako dnes kavi\u00e1r. Vanilka se vyzna\u010duje nejen lahodnou v\u016fn\u00ed a chut\u00ed, ale i obt\u00ed\u017enost\u00ed, s jakou se p\u011bstuje. Ve sv\u00e9 st\u0159edoamerick\u00e9 pravlasti toti\u017e tato roste v unik\u00e1tn\u00ed symbi\u00f3ze s v\u010delami rodu <em>Melipona <\/em>a n\u011bkter\u00fdmi druhy kolib\u0159\u00edk\u016f. Proto dlouho selh\u00e1valy v\u0161echny pokusy o p\u011bstov\u00e1n\u00ed vanilky mimo p\u016fvodn\u00ed region: rostlina sice prosp\u00edvala, ale nikdy nep\u0159inesla plody. Jej\u00ed kv\u011bty toti\u017e musej\u00ed b\u00fdt opyleny v pr\u016fb\u011bhu dvan\u00e1cti hodin po sv\u00e9m otev\u0159en\u00ed \u2013 jinak se neza\u010dnou vyv\u00edjet k\u00fd\u017een\u00e9 plody. Nep\u0159\u00edtomnost vz\u00e1cn\u00fdch v\u010del \u2013 zjistil n\u00e1hodou belgick\u00fd botanik Charles Morren a\u017e v roce 1837. Metodu ru\u010dn\u00edho opylov\u00e1n\u00ed k\u0159ehk\u00fdch rostlinek pak v roce 1841 vymyslel dvan\u00e1ctilet\u00fd otrok Edmond Albius. Stalo se tak na ostrov\u011b Ile Bourbon, nyn\u00ed zvan\u00e9m La R\u00e9union.
